The exhibition develops along two distinct trajectories: travel literature and imagery as well as the extensive collecting and research activity of Efstathios Finopoulos
The fascination with the unknown and the allure of Greece upon European thinking since the Renaissance resulted in a constant flow of travellers who bequeathed us with numerous publications and countless drawings. The experience and reminiscence of travelling emerges from the valuable repository of predominantly, historical and travel literature which is the Finopoulos Collection.
The exhibition includes rare editions, manuscript maps, loose prints and drawings as well as important documents, archival material and photographs. From the fanciful and arbitrary renderings of early centuries to the accurate depictions of later years, the variegated picture of travelling emerges alongside the multiple identities of travellers in Greek lands between the 15th and 19th centuries.
