From the Silence of the Display Case to Living Theatrical Voices
ΜΟΥΣΕΙΟ ΜΠΕΝΑΚΗ ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΟΣ ΠΟΛΙΤΙΣΜΟΣ
FROM 08/11/2017 - TO 20/12/2017

What power pulls the strings in ‘Erofili’, the great tragedy written by Georgios Chortatsis (c. 1545- c. 1610)? The guileless love between the princess and her young man is set against her grasping father, the king. Ultimately the victors are death and fate, the latter controlling men and women like powerless marionettes.

We are taken back to the age of Chortatsis, the crowning period of Cretan literature, by a woven dress with many pleats from Crete dating to the 17th century. It is a rare example of the Renaissance influence exerted by the Venetian colonisation of the island between 1211 and 1669.
