HOPES, DREAMS AND HARD TIMES (HOPES, DREAMS AND HARD TIMES)
The exhibition and the book that accompanies it turn an introspective gaze to the microcosm of the inhabitants of New York, as they record customs and behaviour in the post 9/11 era, the times of the first African-American president, but also the age of economic collapse. Alexandros Lambrovassilis uses his lens to showcase opposing sides of the spectrum, faces within their urban environment, while Achilleas Peklaris uses his texts to document raw history in the making, alongside pop culture and instant emotions. Alexandros Lambrovassilis, photographer, and Achilleas Peklaris, journalist, both living in New York as foreign correspondents for a number of Greek magazines and newspapers, come face to face with one hundred and fifty different faces - all citizens of New York. Achilleas interviews them in a friendly fashion, while Alexandros takes an environmental portrait, allowing the participants to select the location and placing them in what they consider to be their natural environment. While carrying out this project, its creators have remained true to the demographics of New York. Thus, besides the variety of professions, identities and personal paths, they also contrive to maintain a representative sample, including 35% whites, 27% Latinos, 25% African Americans and 13% Asians. All participants were asked to express their opinions on three important issues of the times: The election of Barack Obama, the financial crisis and the reality of the city post 9/11. At the same time, it is only natural that the conversation also extends to other great matters, as well as many hilarious personal stories connected to these. The viewer of the exhibition and the reader of the book are offered an opportunity to take a close look at this legendary city and its inner workings, during a difficult and crucial point in its history, but also to see the city through the eyes of its often eccentric inhabitants.
