Εξερευνώντας την Ελλάδα: φωτογραφίες 1898-1913 Συλλογή Hubert Pernot (Exploring Greece, photographs 1898-1913 : The Hubert Pernot Collection)
French linguist Hubert Pernot (1870-1946), was an exceptional scholar of Modern Greece with an extensive oeuvre, both as scholar and author, who was closely linked to Greece and to Greek developments of his age. A restless and daring thinker, he was one of the first to believe in the power of photography, which he utilised to document his research, as well as to raise interest about Greece in the French public. He travelled throughout Greece in the first five years of the twentieth century, selecting topics to photograph that together compose a unique fresco of the land shortly before the Balkan Wars, a true investigation of the landscape and its inhabitants from 1898 to 1913.
This unique material, a selection of which will be on display for the first time at this exhibition, comprises the H. Pernot Collection, which is maintained at the Library of the Neohellenic Institute at the Sorbonne. This constitutes a valuable document showing what cities, countryside and monuments looked like, while at the same time, thanks to its creator's interest in people and their activities, it offers a goldmine of ethnological information.
