Η φωτογράφος Βούλα Παπαϊωάννου. Από το Φωτογραφικό Αρχείο του Μουσείου Μπενάκη
(The photographer Voula Papaioannou: From the Photographic Archives of the Benaki Museum)

Agras Publications, Benaki Museum

Description
A detailed monograph on Voula Papaioannou, the distinguished Greek twentieth century photographer, presenting her multifaceted work, which can be “read in many ways”. On the one hand is its unique artistic dimension and on the other its documentary connection to a period when History intervened in a heartbreaking way in the lives of people.
Her photographs fall into four chapters: Pre-war photographs (1935-1940); War – German Occupation – Liberation – Dekemvriana (December Uprising) (1940-1945); Post-war years [The consequences of war – Reconstruction – The echoes of the Civil War] (1945-1950); Landscapes (1945-1950).
The introductory texts are by Fani Constantinou (head of the Photographic Archives of the Benaki Museum), Platon Rivellis (photographer and photography theorist) and Johanna Weber (photographer) and are complemented by transcripts of recorded interviews with the photographer herself, shortly before her death; a wide-ranging diary of her photographic tour of Western Greece and Epirus in 1946, on behalf of UNRRA; as well as a detailed bibliography and annotation of the photographs.
