Ελληνική κεντητική, 17ος-19ος αιώνας Έργα τέχνης από τις συλλογές του Μουσείου Victoria & Albert (Greek embroidery, 17th - 19th century : Works of art from the Collections of the Victoria & Albert Museum)
Greek embroidery reflects the inventiveness and artistic sensibility of women, who combined primordial symbols and decorative motifs of various origin into compositions that elevate their craft into a form of visual art. Over a seventy artefacts - festive clothing and objects to decorate the home - provide the exhibition with ample examples of the illustrative wealth and technical diversity in Greek embroidery, in order to highlight regional differences and bring to light potential similarities and interactions. In tandem, to honour the work of Greek ethnographer Angeliki Hatzimihali, the exhibition tracks her pilgrimage through the paths of Greek tradition and illustrates her progress in the study of the embroiderer’s art. This tour takes us through a major sample of the rich collection of Greek embroidery held by the Victoria & Albert Museum and an large number of works from the Benaki Museum.
